Update from the Flood Agency on action in relation to High Street Flooding

Dear Resident,

I refer to your recent e-mail in respect of this issue.

The council takes this matter very seriously and we are working with our contractors (MilestoneFRA), towards finding a longer-term solution, to alleviate the risk of flooding to residential properties at Buckden, in respect of the council’s highway surface water drainage system.

The council is contractually obliged to utilise Milestone, to prepare a suitable design that will function more effectively than the current arrangements.  A drainage survey was carried out earlier this year that identified deficiencies to the existing highway surface water drainage system at High Street Buckden, to the culvert beneath the highway, at the junction of Taylor’s Lane and St. Hugh’s Road. Subsequently, the council’s contractors have been carrying out survey work towards identifying a range of designs for solutions to this issue. It will be appreciated that the most robust design requires as much clarification as possible, with respect to potential obstacles to progress e.g., the location of telecommunications and  utilities’ assets beneath the ground – BT, Cadent Gas and the depth to which pipes need to be laid.

The council’s contractors will refine the design that they are currently working on, over the next 4-6 weeks and provide the council with a detailed design and costs for the most robust solution. Once we are in receipt of this, the council will be better placed for understanding how to finance a suitably robust scheme.

I/we will provide you with a further update, once we have received the above information and an indication of the costs accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

Brian Heffernan
