I wanted to share some exciting news as we complete our largest renewables project to date; a solar array at Grafham Water, which is now generating clean, renewable energy, helping to power our operations.
At Anglian Water we have an ambitious goal of being a net zero carbon business by 2030, and our biggest solar array at Grafham Water will help us on that journey.
This renewable energy source will generate more than a quarter of the energy used by Grafham Water Treatment Works, which supplies clean water across the region to hundreds of thousands of customers. Over the course of a year, the site will save around 3,500 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of 1,000 family cars, and generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 3,000 homes.
The connection is of one of the largest solar arrays in the UK water industry and is a significant moment for our business, knowing that at certain times Grafham Water Treatment Works will be fully self-sufficient with renewable energy, which is great for both our customers and the environment.
This is a big step on our net zero journey, building on a strong track record on carbon reduction across our operations.
